One person was killed and more than 30 people hurt, most of whom are firefighters, after a fire led to an explosion at a dry dock facility on Staten Island, according to police and fire officials. A fire was reported just before 3:30 p.m. Friday at the facility on Richmond Terrace in Mariners Har bor, police said. FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said units arrived in six minutes to a smoky scene with limited visibility. An explosion occurred about 45 minutes after the fire broke out. The FDNY said there was a fire in the basement of a small metal structure behind shipping docks, with two workers trapped. One person was found dead, while another was pulled from the area and brought to a nearby hospital, fire officials said. There were no reports of anyone missing. In addition to the person who died, a total of 35 people suffered injuries in all, 34 of whom are firefighters or EMS, Bonsignore said. Two first responders were taken to Staten Island University Hospital with injuries: a fire marshal in critical condition, and a firefighter in serious condition, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a press conference from the hospital. The mayor said neither suffered injuries considered to be life-threatening. Mamdani called it a “complex, fast-developing emergency situation” with crews from 70 fire and EMS units responding. More than 200 first responders were at the fire, which the mayor described as an active scene, though the flames were said to be under control as of 8 p.m. It was not immediately clear what sparked the flames. An investigation is ongoing. ...read more read less
