The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal early morning motorcycle crash that snarled traffic on the Bay Bridge for hours Thursday. The crash was reported at about 5:30 a.m. just west of the metering lights on the westbound lanes of the bridge, according to CHP spokesperson Officer M ark Andrews. Within two minutes of the 911 call, a CHP officer was at the scene and performing CPR on the rider, who was found lying unconscious in the roadway, Andrews said. Additional medical personnel soon arrived, including from the Oakland Fire Department, who declared the rider dead at about 5:45 a.m. It’s unclear what caused the crash, but investigators are looking into the possibility that the motorcyclist hit another vehicle or was going too fast while splitting lanes. After being thrown from the bike, the rider, a man who appeared to be about 30 years old, was run over by a box truck, Andrews said. The truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The two right lanes were blocked until about 8:30 a.m. The rider’s name is being withheld until the Alameda County Coroner’s Office can notify his next of kin. “We are asking for any witnesses who may have been in the area at that time to contact the CHP San Francisco office, especially if they have any dashcam video,” Andrews said. Anyone with information about the crash can call CHP Officer Noah Cornell at (415) 276-5300. ...read more read less
