Redemption Ranch gives forgotten dogs a new leash on life, and a badge

PLAINFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — Dogs who were once abandoned, neglected, or at risk of euthanasia graduated Wednesday evening as the newest class of future police K9’s.
Redemption Ranch K9 Rescue is an Indiana-based nonprofit that rescues high-drive shelter and rescue dogs and trains them for
careers in law enforcement and public service. The organization works to provide affordable working dogs to agencies while giving overlooked dogs a second chance at life.
The graduating class included rescue dogs from overwhelmed animal shelters and rescue organizations, many of whom arrived at the shelter with a heartbreaking past.

Maverick, a severely skinny dog who was rescued from one of Indiana’s most overwhelmed shelters, was among the graduating class. Redemption Ranch says when they first met him, “every rib and hip bone was visible.” After gaining 13 pounds and rebuilding his strength, Maverick is thriving in detection training and preparing for a future in police work.
Another graduate, Walker, a yellow Labrador retriever, survived being thrown from a moving vehicle on the interstate before later undergoing months of heartworm treatment. Now, he is training in detection and tracking alongside his handler.
Blitz, a Shepherd mix who narrowly escaped euthanasia, and Remington, a working-line German Shepherd who was saved from surrender before finding purpose in police work, were also among the recent graduates.

Redemption Ranch K9 Rescue’s Founder Rob Prichars said that these dogs were never broken.
“Most of them simply needed purpose, structure, and someone willing to see their potential. Watching them transform from discarded shelter dogs into confident working dogs is something incredibly special.”
