Ghirardelli Chocolate Company issued a recall for multiple powdered beverage mixes due to possible salmonella contamination, according to a company announcement posted on the FDA website. Concerns grew following a recall of powdered milk initiated by California Dairies, Inc. due to concerns about salmonella contamination. This powdered milk was supplied to a third-party manufacturer and used as an ingredient in the powdered beverage mixes, the FDA and Ghirardelli added. Most of the affected products were intended for restaurants and customers in the food service industry, as well as other institutional customers. However, some consumer products may have been available for purchase online. “Neither we, our third-party manufacturer nor the milk powder supplier have received reports of illness or injury related to this issue to date, and our own rigorous testing has not identified any impacted powdered beverage mixes,” Ghirardelli stated in an alert on its website regarding the recall. Ghirardelli stated that he has recalled a large portion of the affected powdered beverages and is working with his partners to have them return or dispose of the potentially contaminated products.
