ELKHART, IND. (WOWO) An Elkhart man has been sentenced to 32 years in prison after pleading guilty to causing a fatal crash that killed a motorcyclist and seriously injured a passenger in South Bend in 2024. Officials say 39-year-old Bobby Young of Elkhart was driving a Ford Fiesta when he turned left from southbound Locust to eastbound Ireland Road in front of a Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling northbound. The motorcycle was driven by 50-year-old Kenneth Calhoun II of South Bend. Witnesses told investigators the collision caused Calhoun and his passenger to be thrown from the motorcycle. Calhoun later died at the hospital from his injuries. A 30-year-old passenger was hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury and later discharged herself against medical advice according to WNDU. Guilty plea and sentencing Prosecutors say Young pleaded guilty last month to causing death while operating a vehicle with a Schedule I or II controlled substance in his blood, as well as causing serious bodily injury under the same statute. He also received a sentencing enhancement as a habitual offender. On Monday, Young was sentenced to 32 years in prison. Investigation details According to court documents, Young told investigators he had used methamphetamine days before the crash. A blood test later confirmed the presence of amphetamine and methamphetamine in his system. Prosecutors said the combination of impairment and the traffic violation led to the deadly collision.
