The heat wave began Monday and continued Tuesday with record-breaking temperatures in the 90s. The extreme heat will continue on Wednesday with
highs in the mid-90s.
Early Tuesday evening, Oz Hill, the Deputy Superintendent of Operations for the Philadelphia School District, sent a letter to families of students announcing 57 schools will shift to virtual learning on Wednesday as a result. Any early childhood centers operating at the locations will also shift to virtual learning while all in-person after-school activities, including all athletic programs scheduled for Wednesday, are also canceled.
“The Philadelphia region continues to experience higher than normal temperatures this week,” Hill wrote. “And while the District has made significant progress toward ensuring our schools are adequately cooled in order to provide safe and comfortable learning environments, there are still a number of schools with inadequate cooling systems.”
