Construction is set to begin May 26 on a major traffic improvement project at May Avenue and Northwest Expressway, bringing lane closures, shifting traffic patterns and a redesigned interchange to one of Oklahoma City’s busiest corridors. The City of Oklahoma City, in partnership with the Okla homa Department of Transportation, announced work will start Tuesday, May 26, to replace the May Avenue bridge over NW Expressway as part of a two-year, $15 million infrastructure project. Drivers should expect traffic disruptions throughout construction. Beginning May 26, the northbound May Avenue ramp will close, while the southbound ramp will close intermittently as crews complete demolition and reconstruction work. According to city officials, construction will occur in multiple phases and include temporary lane closures, narrowed lanes and periodic traffic shifts on both May Avenue and NW Expressway. During some stages, motorists will be routed onto temporary detour lanes while crews complete paving, drainage improvements and other work associated with the project. The centerpiece of the project is the replacement of the existing bridge with a new diverging diamond interchange, a traffic design intended to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion while enhancing safety for drivers moving through the area. In addition to the new bridge configuration, the project will also include updated entrance and exit ramps, new traffic signals, upgraded street lighting and aesthetic improvements along the corridor. City officials said updates on construction timelines and traffic impacts will be posted at vision.okc.gov as work progresses. Motorists are encouraged to monitor updates and allow extra travel time in the area during construction. Funding for the project comes from a combination of an Association of Central Oklahoma Governments grant, Oklahoma City’s 2017 bond program and Street Development Fees.
