A 23-year-old West Havener named Jocelyn Hernandez died and an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old from Bridgeport were injured after their car crashed into a tree on Woodward Avenue Saturday afternoon.
The New Haven Police Department (NHPD) posted on the social media site X at 11:59 a.m. Sunday about
the fatal crash.
The press release states that, at around 1:27 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to the 600 block of Woodward Avenue in the Annex on the report of a motor vehicle collision.
Upon arrival, officers found that a Hyundai Elantra had struck a tree.
The rear-seat passenger, an 18-year-old man from Bridgeport, “was laying on the ground.”
The driver, a 20-year-old woman from Bridgeport, and the front-seat passenger, Jocelyn Hernandez, a 23-year-old woman from West Haven, were both still in the vehicle and suffering from apparent injuries.
City firefighters and American Medical Response (AMR) rendered aid on scene and transported all three to Yale New Haven Hospital.
Hernandez later died from her injuries. The 18-year-old passenger “sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries while the [20-year-old] driver is in critical condition.”
The press release states that the “initial investigation shows that the Hyundai was traveling south on Woodward Avenue at the time of the collision, but investigators are working to determine the cause of the collision.” The Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who may have information valuable to investigators to call detectives at 203-946-6304 or through the department’s anonymous tip line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
