Deputies from the California Highway Patrol’s Newhall-area Office are operating a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in unincorporated L.A. County Friday night, according to a press release from the office.  The exact location of the sobriety checkpoint won’t be revealed until just before the operation begins, the news release says. The checkpoint is scheduled to be active from 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday.  Drivers will see signs that’ll indicate that the checkpoint is ahead of them.   “Once diverted into the lane, motorists will be detained only momentarily while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint,” the press release says.  Checkpoint guidelines will follow those outlined in the Supreme Court decision Ingersoll vs. Palmer; while every vehicle may be checked, heavy traffic might result in intermittent checks according to a pre-set standard, such as every fifth vehicle, according to the release.   The goal of the checkpoint is to create awareness of drunk driving and to deter it.  “Even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically, the psychological influence a checkpoint has on the motoring public is invaluable,” the release says.   The post CHP conducting sobriety checkpoint tonight appeared first on Santa Clarita Valley Signal. ...read more read less
