Park City Sailing excited for another big summer on the Jordanelle
May 15, 2026
Park City and the Wasatch Back had one heck of a snowfall season this past winter in the sense that there wasn’t much of it.
While that curtailed excitement surrounding the ski season, there has been fair worry that the lack of precipitation would affect another recreation sect in the area,
sailing and other recreational activities on the Jordanelle Reservoir.
Each summer, many sailors, boaters and paddle boarders hit the waters in the Jordanelle State Park, many with the Park City Sailing Association.
The sailing club offers programming for young sailors, experienced adults and everyone in-between. They’re over the moon for another summer featuring clinics, races and social events.
“It’s going to be a bit different, however, we know how to manage it,” said executive director Scott VerMerris about sailing with the lower water levels this summer. “It’s not holding us back from any sailing right now, nor will it during the middle of the season. … It’s something we’re going to have to play-by-ear as we get toward the fall.”
He continued, “We put a lot of thought this winter into how to improve the quality of our sailing school and the organization as a whole. … We’re ready to activate all these plans we’ve made.”
Wednesday night, the club led some adult group lessons. Saturday will be their spring volunteer day, where youth dinghy boats will help be prepared and sailed.
Race series begin the first week of June, followed by sailing school the next week. The club’s Champions Regatta, featuring top-two finishers from last year’s races in the same event is on June 6; there will also be a season kickoff party for members following the races.
VerMerris and president Claudio Brasca are overjoyed to welcome new head coach Rosie Chapman. From Cornwall, England, Chapman has coached around the world for 18 years, including as the Olympic development director for US Sailing. She’s excited to boost participation in sailing in the Wasatch Back and create a clearer pathway for talented sailors to pursue high-level sailing dreams.
“I’m excited about the venue and the potential we have here,” Chapman said. “I have some coach development ideas for our instructors, so we can upskill our current instructors to be able to deliver across all the programs. … We have the ability to produce a lot of lifelong sailors here.”
Chapman, VerMerris and Brasca have lived out the lifelong benefits and community of sailing. Chapman hopes her sailors can enjoy the sport for life, whether racing or cruising along.
The hire of Chapman is part of VerMerris’ hope to elevate the club to national prominence. Last fall, they hosted the U.S. Adult Sailing Championship, which the director believed could push them past the ‘who sails in a ski town’ narrative.
“Rosie and I have had a lot of conversations about what else we can do to attract world class sailing events here,” Brasca said. “We’re already in conversations with a couple of national class organizations. … Selling the idea of coming to Park City in the middle of the summer and sailing on the Jordanelle now is very easy. The question is, can we accommodate everybody in a very crowded park? That’s what we’re trying to do.”
Park City Sailing welcomes the public to come sail with them and learn more at their Summer Sailstice event on June 21, typically featuring an open house, sailing and a barbecue.
The club plans to sail through September, weather and water-level conditions permitting.
“It’s an awesome opportunity to be on the water and be in the elements that we have here in Park City,” Chapman said. “And not to be distracted on their screens. When you’re sailing, you’re just it’s you, the wind and the water and trying to figure that out. I think it gives a great sense of freedom.”
