Surveillance video is giving investigators a closer look at a string of burglaries in South Philadelphia that have left residents and business owners on edge. Video obtained by NBC10 shows two suspects forcing a door lock and breaking into an apartment building on Fitzwater Street around 2:30 a.m . Sunday, May 10. Seconds later, the same men are seen stealing two bikes worth more than $800, belonging to Gabriana Whipple and her boyfriend. “Some of the other residents in the building are concerned about their safety. It’s only a matter of time before they start trying people’s doors in the building, like, trying to get into their apartments,” Whipple said. Whipple said this is not the first time the suspects have been caught on camera breaking into the building. “It’s just stressful. I don’t know. It’s a little bit ridiculous,” she said. “It’s really creepy knowing that somebody knows how to get into our building.” Police say the pair did not stop there. About three hours later, investigators say the same two men broke into a nail salon on South Street. Surveillance video captured them entering through the back before stealing cash and products. The owner of The Refinery Spa said about $300 was taken but the emotional toll has been far greater. “It’s been three sleepless days. I couldn’t sleep. I am awake paying attention to my phone to see if there is any notification that anybody broke in, any motion in the salon,” Hailey Nugen said. During that burglary, police say officers responded and tried to catch the suspects as they ran. One of the men was arrested. Nugen fears the second suspect could return. She said video from the night before shows the same man breaking into her spa alone and stealing cash and products. “I feel unsafe. I feel like, you know, every day now at night I’m scared to be walking outside because you can see him anytime,” Nugen said. Police say the suspects are behind at least three burglaries in the area. The investigation remains ongoing. This story was originally reported for broadcast by NBC Philadelphia.
