Bomb-squad personnel safely took custody of an apparent military artillery shell found by a passerby Tuesday in a residential neighborhood near Del Mar Mesa Preserve, authorities reported. A 911 caller informed the San Diego Police Department about the discovery in the 7200 block of Arroyo Grande Road in Torrey Highlands shortly before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, SDPD Sgt. Saum Poorsaleh said. After consulting with police and reviewing photos that officers took of the object, ordnance-handling technicians from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the FBI and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar went to the neighborhood west of Interstate 15 and south of state Route 56 to investigate, SDFRD Capt. Jason Shanley said. “Multiple X-rays were conducted, and the item appeared to be an artillery round with no fuse present and no immediate concerns identified,” the fire captain said. “Miramar [crew members] took possession of the ordnance for further identification and disposal.” Personnel had the object — the origin of which was unclear — removed from the area as of 11:40 a.m., according to Shanley. ...read more read less
