Residents raise concerns over speeding, crashes along Olympic Parkway in Chula Vista
May 11, 2026
Recent crashes along Olympic Parkway in Chula Vista have residents speaking out about persistent speeding in the area.
“It’s kind of a speedway people are used to going, you know, real fast,” said Marco Martinez, who lives near the roadway.
Chula Vista police say around 2 a.m. Sunday, a
suspected DUI driver ran a red light at Olympic Parkway near Santa Venetia Street and slammed into the back of a patrol car. The crash forced the officer off the road leaving the officer trapped inside the vehicle.
Less than 24 hours later and about a half mile away, another crash involving a Chula Vista police vehicle happened near Olympic Parkway and Heritage Road around noon.
The circumstances surrounding that crash are still under investigation, according to CVPD.
Residents say crashes in the area are not unusual, “once a month there’s a crash, at least,” Martinez said.
Data appears to support those concerns. According to UC Berkeley’s Transportation Injury Mapping System, there were 79 crashes reported between 2021 and 2025 along Olympic Parkway.
Chula Vista Mayor John McCann said city leaders are aware of the safety issues and are working on solutions that could be approved this summer, “in the budget we’ve added new traffic safety patrol officers, we’re actually going to be looking at Otay Lakes, and now Olympic Parkway. We want to make sure that people ride safely and arrive at home in a good manner.”
For Martinez, the changes can’t come soon enough, especially as his teenage daughter begins driving.
He and other residents say the concern extends beyond drivers to nearby Otay Ranch High School, where thousands of students walk, bike and drive to campus.
