REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (KRON) -- The 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially one month out. With six matches being hosted at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, surrounding cities in the South Bay and Peninsula are gearing up for festivities. One of those cities includes Redwood City, which is looking to becom e the next city to establish an entertainment zone. The Redwood City council met Monday night, and one of the agenda items was bringing the World Cup fever downtown. That includes city-sanctioned watch parties and street celebrations for a first-ever entertainment zone. "I mean its such a huge deal that this international tournament is in our backyard. It's a celebration of everyone's backgrounds and the diversity of our country," said Redwood City Mayor Elmer Martinez Saballos. Redwood City is getting ready to launch an entertainment zone for the first time — just in time to host FIFA World Cup festivities next month Hantavirus latest: CA health officials say public risk is minimal A state law that took effect last year allows cities to create entertainment zones where people can legally drink alcohol in certain public places during special events. Mayor Elmer Martinez Saballos says the plan is to host a watch party at courthouse square, with the entertainment zone extending along Broadway. He says security teams and staff will be checking IDs throughout the event. San Francisco was the first city in the state to establish and use entertainment zones. Last month, Mountain View also decided to create one for the World Cup celebrations. Mayor Martinez Saballos says the hope is to bring a major boost to downtown Redwood City businesses. "As someone who grew up falling in love with the sport and with soccer. We want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the tournament, (and) businesses have the opportunity to benefit from everyone coming downtown," Saballos said. Kilmer Sanchez works at the pizza restaurant Vesta and says he’s looking forward to the energy this will bring. "Honestly, it'll get more people excited from the world to come here," Sanchez said. "Having TVs, the bars having drinks and having a good time. The World Cup is worldwide, so why not have a party here in Redwood City, a city which is growing. Community members are largely in support of the proposed entertainment zone, but the mayor says some have expressed concerns about possible immigration enforcement during World Cup events. He says the city is prepared to respond, if necessary. "We have set up a process to take legal action if we notice someone setting up a staging area on city property," Saballos said. "We can take swift action. We want people to know they are safe in Redwood City. We want them to be able to enjoy themselves, enjoy soccer and the World Cup." Redwood City officials will also raise and display the FIFA World Cup flag on Tuesday. Many downtown business owners told us they’re still waiting to learn more details about the entertainment zone but say they’re excited about the possibility of more customers and more foot traffic downtown. ...read more read less
