CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The family of a toddler who had his foot amputated after being run over by a lawnmower said he is adjusting well to his new way of life. His mom said 2-year-old Cohen has come a long way since he had to be airlifted to the hospital on March 20 because his dad acci dentally ran over him with a lawnmower. "It's one of those realities that I think, it still feels like a bad dream," said Cohen's mom, Brittney Walls. "But just to know how far he's come, I didn't picture it this quickly." Cohen's right foot was amputated at the ankle. Since coming home, the family has had a wheelchair ramp installed and lowered his bed onto the floor. The broken bone in his leg, which he sustained in the accident, has healed. "He's already standing up and trying to balance his leg, on his strong leg. And so that's kind of cool to see him stand there. And we're working on balancing in physical therapy," Walls said. "I just pray that as a mom, we keep moving forward." There are emotional wounds to heal as well. "If there's, like, a boo boo on somebody, then, you know, he, he will speak up and say, basically that daddy ran me over, daddy ran her over," Walls said. "And so we just remind him that it wasn't intentional and that we're getting through everything as a family." Cohen plays, climbs and swings with his three siblings, just like other kids. At the same time, he's getting measured for his first prosthetic. "I think that he understands that he's different," Walls said. "But also just so much resilience, and he's a normal sibling." Cohen will have his first fitting for his prosthetic foot and stand on two legs again on May 20, exactly two months after the accident. ...read more read less
