Five candidates running to become California’s next governor were in Oakland on Friday to talk about one of the biggest issues facing Bay Area voters: Housing. The forum was hosted at the Henry J. Kaiser Center and focused on the state’s housing crisis. NBC Bay Area was able to speak to four of the candidates about why this issue is central to their campaigns. Those candidates were Matt Mahan, Xavier Becerra, Katie Porter and Tom Steyer. The fifth candidate decided not to talk. The two leading Republican candidates for governor were also invited but decided not to attend. The discussion comes less than a month before the June primary, with mail-in voting already underway and many Bay Area voters feeling priced out.
