RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A 31-year-old Richmond mother of two was shot and killed by a police officer during a Thursday evening incident. At around 6:47 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, officers with the Richmond Police Department responded to the Belt Atlantic Apartments in the 4000 block of Midlothian Tu rnpike for a report of a shooting in progress. According to police, officers arrived at the scene within four minutes and heard gunshots. As they headed upstairs following witnesses' directions, they heard more gunshots. Officers then found 31-year-old Jazmin Wooten-Mitchell of Richmond and ordered her to drop her weapon. An officer then shot her. Police said officers attempted to give her first aid, but Wooten-Mitchell died at the scene. Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said police found a firearm at the scene, which officers believe to have belonged to Wooten-Mitchell. He noted that the department is in the "very early stages" of its investigation. Wooten-Mitchell's family told 8News that she was the mother of two kids, a 6-month-old boy and a 10-year-old girl. Her daughter's 11th birthday is next week. 8News has learned that the father of Wooten-Mitchell's son -- 35-year-old Larry Johnson of Richmond -- was killed in a crash the day before this incident. He was the passenger of a vehicle that crashed into a tree. According to police, the driver then fled the scene, leaving Johnson for dead. The Mitchell family has organized a GoFundMe to help cover Wooten-Mitchell's funeral costs, among other expenses.
