SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Most lanes of 19th Avenue in San Francisco are closed this weekend for road work by Caltrans, spanning from Lincoln to Sloat. The closure is expected to cause significant traffic backups in the Sunset District and will remain in effect until Monday morning. The state agency is urging drivers to avoid the area as crews work to pave the southbound lanes. Suspect shot by Oakland PD after attempting to flee traffic stop, 2 officers, suspect injured This weekend's closure marks the second phase of road improvements on 19th Avenue, following Caltrans' paving of the northbound lanes a couple of weeks prior. Crews are working continuously to complete the project, which involves replacing old pavement with new. The traffic disruptions are anticipated to be particularly challenging this weekend. Crews are currently making their way south with heavy equipment, working around the clock to complete the paving of 19th Avenue. During the closure, only one lane of 19th Avenue will remain open. This lane is primarily designated for public transportation, first responders and individuals who live and work in the area. Motorists will not be permitted to park on 19th Avenue and some driveways along the stretch will be blocked off. Caltrans recommends drivers use Sunset Boulevard as a detour route. Matt O'Donnell, a spokesperson for Caltrans, advised drivers to plan ahead given other events in the city. "The Giants are in town this weekend so you know use your GPS and you know try to stay off 19th Ave unless you have to be here," O'Donnell said. 19th Avenue is scheduled to reopen Monday morning. Another closure of the artery is planned in two weeks. All facts in this report were gathered by journalists employed by KRON4.
