Thank you for the article about Kawaihae Harbor planning a $50 million upgrade (“State plans $50M makeover for Big Isle’s Kawaihae Harbor,” Star-Advertiser, May 4). However, this makes no sense. The problem that they are trying to solve comes from a selfish business decision made by Matson to dump all its Hilo-bound cargo in Kawaihae instead of sailing it to Hilo. And because of that decision, we get more trucks running through Waimea every month; more chance of deadly accidents; more noise and pollution, traffic jams, road damage; an overloaded port; and a $50 million bill.
