Urban Foraging: Weeds Wild Foods
May 16
Calling all weed heads! If you’ve ever wondered which of those weeds in your yard, in the park, or on the trails could
be cooked and eaten, have I got the event for you. The University of Washington Botanic Gardens is putting on a one-day urban foraging workshop. Meet up at Discovery Park with your guide, Melany Vorass Herrera, an ethnobiology expert and author of The Front Yard Forager. For three hours, you’ll walk through Discovery Park and learn the ins and outs of edible weeds and wild foods, plus a few ways to prepare them. It’s the ultimate way to take your crunchy granola-ness to the next level. (Discovery Park, 1 pm, all ages) NATHALIE GRAHAM
The Block: Mobile Cafe Meet-Up
May 17
Seattle has a thriving food-and-drink pop-up scene, so much so that I often feel overwhelmed by all the options while trying to track who’s appearing where. And it doesn’t help that once I follow a spot on Instagram, the goddamn algorithm still buries their posts. I know I’m not alone, because the Block exists. On May 17, the Fairview Market Hall will fill with more than a dozen vendors. My Favorite Ice Cream makes all your chunky ice cream dreams come true with scoops and pints loaded with surprising toppings like brown butter and fennel sourdough croutons, matcha rose gooey butter cake “chonks,” and fish sauce caramel swirl (not all in the same flavor). Yoks Cafe makes Hawaiian-inspired coffee drinks, and the pineapple float cold brew and a haupia cream hot chocolate with toasted-to-order mallow look especially tasty. And look at these cookie flavors from Anh Ơi Bake Shop, a Vietnamese bakery: Fried Banana Cookie (Chuối Chiên), Pandan Coconut Bean Cookie (Chè Ba Màu), Coconut Mung Bean Cookie (Đậu Xanh Dừa), and Thai Tea Persimmon Cookie (Trà Thái Trái Hồng). I’ll take two of everything, Anh Ơi, and I’m not kidding. (Fairview Market Hall, 11 am–3 pm) MEGAN SELING
Kilig x No Call No Show x A Pervert Named TN Present: Hard Covers and Bare Backs: An Erotic Novel Pop Up
June 1
No Call No Show’s tagline is “Boozy popups for unpretentious foodies,” and when it comes to ridiculous concepts—and completely committing to the bit—this gang of veteran chefs and bartenders are not playing. On June 1, NCNS’s theme is erotica, and the party will be at Kilig, sister restaurant to Musang. Chef-owner and serial JBA semifinalist Melissa Miranda is on deck to provide bespoke bites, while cocktail weirdos TN Trang (Itsumono) and Matt Pachmayr (Le Coin, Streamline) will be shaking up bawdy, gaudy craft drinks. Source material will include steamy romance Get in My Swamp: An Ogre Love Story as well as Triceratops and Bottoms, a dinosaur erotica novella. The menus are still under wraps, but the team will be costumed absurdly (as ever) and soliciting amateur erotica from guests. If you’re no novelist, that’s okay—Trang says there’ll be smutty books on tables from which folks can share their favorite quotes via mic, plus a live erotica reading. Pachmayr adds, “It’s going to be so fucking dumb, lol.” (Kilig, 5 pm, 21+) MEG VAN HUYGEN
