PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Buying a used car may come with a good price, but before you close the deal, consumer experts warn you should watch out for potential risks. Shock is the main feeling that comes to mind for mother Toneisha Jones when thinking back to April 15, 2026. That was the day she a nd her two young kids were driving along South Whitehill Drive in Petersburg when her car caught fire. “As soon as I got my kids out the car, that's when the car literally started exploding,” Jones said. According to the Petersburg Fire Department, crews responded to the scene and found Jones' car engulfed in flames and another car with fire damage. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but while on scene, Jones told fire crews she'd experienced engine problems. Jones told 8News the problems started less than 24 hours after buying the car on April 5. She found the car on Facebook Marketplace and purchased it at Sam's Auto in Petersburg for about $5,000. “It didn't seem like anything was wrong with it," Jones said. The next day, she said the check engine light came on. After getting a second opinion, Jones took the car back to Sam's Auto for repairs. “He insisted on making sure I had a good engine in the car," Jones said. Days after repairs were complete, the car caught fire while she was driving. 8News spoke with the dealer, who said the car was sold as is without a warranty. While engine repairs were completed, the dealer said they were not aware of any other issues and is now in contact with Jones. “This situation definitely took a toll on me," Jones said. "I can't get around. I lost my job. I don't know what to do from here on out.” Jones created a GoFundMe to help with rebuilding.
