San Jose police on Monday said they were still trying to determine the cause of Saturday’s deadly chain-reaction crash near Oakridge mall. The multi-vehicle collision happened just before 4 p.m. in the area of Santa Teresa Boulevard and Blossom Hill Road, police said. Citing a preliminary in vestigation, police said a man behind the wheel of a Mercedes sedan was heading southbound on Santa Teresa Boulevard when he hit a Kia sedan. The Kia, driven by a woman, was also heading southbound and in the process of moving into the dedicated left turn lane for eastbound Blossom Hill Road. The Mercedes and Kia both slammed into a Tesla sedan carrying three people – adult male driver, adult female passenger and juvenile passenger – that was stopped in the left turn lane, according to police. The impact caused the Tesla to hit a BMW sedan, driven by a man, directly in front of it. The Kia also hit a Toyota sedan, driven by a woman, that was stopped in a second left turn lane. Responding officers quickly pulled both of them out of the car. Everyone involved in the collision, except for the man driving the BMW, was transported to local hospitals with varying injuries, police said. The woman driving the Kia died at the hospital, according to police. Her identity will be released by the county’s medical examiner office. The driver of the Mercedes has been cooperative with investigators, police said. While the cause of the collision remains under investigation, police said alcohol and drugs do not appear to have played a roll.
