Man and woman from Pierre identified as people killed in Wednesday afternoon accident at Mitchell; Celebration of life being held Tuesday in Pierrre

A man and a woman from Pierre have been identified as the people killed Wednesday afternoon (April 29, 2026) in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 90 in Mitchell.
Preliminary crash information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates that a 2018 Dodge Ram driven by 34 year ol
d Shane Willis of Pierre was traveling eastbound on Interstate 90 between the two Mitchell exits when the vehicle entered the south ditch and struck a guard cable near a bridge. The vehicle fell onto the street below, where it struck a retaining wall, and came to rest on its side.
Shane Willis and his wife, 38 year old Melynda Willis, sustained fatal injuries. Two child passengers, a 1 year old girl and a 3 year old boy, sustained minor injuries.
All occupants were wearing a seat belt.
A celebration of life for Shane and Melynda Willis will be held Tuesday (May 5, 2026) at 6pm at the Steamboat Park Picnic Pavilion in Pierre.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

Two people died Wednesday afternoon (April 29, 2026) in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 near mile marker 331 in Mitchell, SD.
The names of the persons involved have not been released pending notification of family members.
Preliminary crash information indicates that a 34 year old man from Pierre was driving a 2018 Dodge Ram eastbound on Interstate 90 between the two Mitchell exits when the vehicle entered the south ditch and struck a guard cable near an upcoming bridge over Rowley Street. The vehicle fell onto Rowley Street where it struck a retaining wall, and came to rest on its side.
The driver and front seat passenger, a 38 year old woman from Pierre, sustained fatal injuries. Two child passengers, a 1 year old girl and a 3 year old boy, sustained minor injuries.
All occupants were wearing a seat belt.
