A 26-year old man from White is facing false reporting charges. The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office says Elijah Arias reported being shot at while driving between Brookings and White on Saturday (May 2, 2026) shortly after 6:35 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies and the South Dakota Highway Patrol respon ded and conducted an investigation, including contacting owners of vehicles matching the description Arias provided. The sheriff’s office says investigators eventually determined Arias was driving his roommate’s vehicle while shooting a Colt 1911 pistol out the window. The sheriff’s office says one of those rounds struck the vehicle, prompting Arias to panic and fabricate a report. The sheriff’s office said their investigation determined there was never any threat to the public. Arias is charged with filing a false report, a Class 1 Misdemeanor.
