RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Since May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, Virginia State Police (VSP) is encouraging all drivers to be cautious as the warm weather leads to more motorcyclists on the road. According to a press release from VSP, the number of deadly motorcycle crashes in 2026 is just below th at of 2024 and 2025, causing them to caution all drivers to watch out for a higher number of motorcyclists on roadways as the temperatures rise. VSP is offering its "Ride 2 Save Lives" motorcycle self-assessment courses across Virginia in order to make interactions with motorcycles as safe as possible, per the release. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles stated that there have been 24 motorcycle deaths in 2026 as of April 30. Nineteen of the crashes occurred between the months of March and April. In 2024, from Jan. 1 to April 30, there were 30 deaths, and 32 in 2025 during the same time frame. “Riding a motorcycle in favorable weather can be an exceptionally enjoyable experience, provided both riders and motorists remain attentive and prioritize safety at all times,” said VSP Captain Brian Olha, the State Motorcycle Coordinator. “Riders must understand their own capabilities on a motorcycle, and all motorists should remain vigilant and aware of motorcycles sharing the roadway.” The "Ride 2 Save Lives" are self-assesment courses that gives riders the chance to learn and practice rider safety, how to handle hazards, special scenarios, interstate highways, curve negotiations and more, according to the release. The courses offered are conducted by VSP Motor Troopers in safe and controlled environments. Participants must register in advance and space is limited. All attendees are required to have a valid operator's license with a class 'M" endorsement, along with proper riding attire with helmet and eye protection. Motorcycles must be street legal and helmets need to be U.S. Department of Transportation-approved in order to be a part of the program.
