RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond's James River looks a little greener this weekend, thanks to a global student volunteer group. ASEZ, which stands for "Save the Earth from A to Z," organized a cleanup event on Sunday with about 30 volunteers to prevent plastic from getting into the waterways in do wntown Richmond. The initiative is part of ASEZ's Blue Carbon Movement and ABC campaign, which works to remove plastic pollution from vulnerable areas. Organizer Aischa Saavedra explained that blue carbon is carbon dioxide trapped inside marine ecosystems, as the gas is produced by pollution. She said the group chose Richmond for its Sunday event to help the most impacted communities. "We picked [the James River] because it has a lot of foot traffic." ASEZ has local chapters at many Virginia campuses, including the Virginia Commonwealth University, Old Dominion University and Howard University.
