Animal rights supporters rally in Berkeley ahead of goat theft hearing

(KRON) -- Supporters of Bay Area animal activist group Direct Action Everywhere protested in Berkeley Saturday ahead of a court case later this month.
The case is accusing activists of illegally stealing two goats from a farm near Fresno, which the group claims was neglecting its animals.

This comes ahead of a hearing accusing two activists of felony grand theft after they took two goats they claim were sick last May.
One of the defendants, Carla Cabral, who is a former vet technician, says she’s scared of going to jail, but it’s a small price to pay to help protect the animals and, as she says, be the “whistleblower on animal abusers.”
She claims the company was neglecting the goats, leading to a mass grave that prompted concerns.
“Immediately I noticed one that had a nasal discharge that was crusted on them, and I picked them up and they were very skinny, but also with a bloated stomach, and they couldn't even see out of their eyes. And I thought, oh man, you know, they need help right now,” said Cabral, defendant.
This comes after another member of the activist group, Zoe Rosenberg, was sentenced to jail in December for stealing four chickens for similar reasons.
The four activists who took the goats will have a hearing on May 19 at Kings County Superior Court.
KRON4 reached out to Meyenberg Farms and Whole Foods but has not yet heard back.
