(KRON)-- Seven people were injured after a car plowed through a crowd in Oakland's Uptown district, just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday, near Oakland's First Fridays event. The Oakland Police Department said officers were in the area of 18th Street and Telegraph Avenue responding to multiple 911 reports of fighting. OPD said officers were then alerted that car drove onto the sidewalk in the 500 block of 18th Street, striking several people in the crowd. The driver left the scene on foot. Five adults and one juvenile were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were listed in stable condition. Police said another adult was privately transported to a hospital and was also listed as stable. "Thanks to community tips and evidence, OPD is following up on multiple leads and expects to arrest the driver in the near future," said police in an updated statement to KRON4. Oakland First Friday issued a statement: "Oakland First Fridays takes place from 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM along Telegraph Avenue between 22nd and 27th Street in the KONO District. We want to be clear that we have no direct knowledge of the incident you’re referencing. Based on the details provided, the incident occurred outside of both our permitted event footprint and our hours of operation. This month’s Oakland First Fridays event was a positive and well-attended celebration of Oakland’s 174th Birthday. We were honored to have the Mayor in attendance, along with several members of the City Council and other community leaders. We do want to emphasize an ongoing concern: incidents that occur in the broader Uptown/Downtown area, especially outside of our event boundaries and hours, are often incorrectly attributed to Oakland First Fridays. It’s important to distinguish between “Oakland First Fridays,” which is a permitted, organized community event, and a general “First Friday in Oakland,” which can refer to unrelated activity happening throughout the city." Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Oakland Police Department Felony Assault Unit at (510) 238-3426 or forward photos and videos to [email protected].
