Park City Council approves seasonal fire ban; restrictions now in effect
May 01, 2026
The Park City Council approved a resolution prohibiting the use of ignition sources, including open flames and fireworks, throughout municipal boundaries from May 1 through Oct. 31.
The move responds to elevated wildfire risk heading into summer as Park City comes off one of its lowes
t snowpacks on record.
Wildfire remains Park City’s most likely and potentially most dangerous natural hazard, threatening homes, businesses, wildlife habitats and the broader community, the city said.
The city’s fire marshal recommended the proactive restriction, in coordination with the chief of police, acting emergency manager and the Park City Fire District. Existing drought conditions, low fuel moisture and projected dry conditions all factored into the recommendation, the city said.
Park City Municipal Code, in alignment with the International Fire Code and the Utah State Fire Code, allows the City Council to prohibit the use of ignition sources when the Fire Marshal determines that hazardous environmental conditions necessitate restrictions.
The council approved the prohibition as part of the consent agenda at its April 30 meeting. The city enacted similar restrictions before July 1 in three of the past five years.
The prohibition does not extend to previously permitted firepits, gas stoves or charcoal barbecue grills used in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
Requests for an exception to the prohibition can be submitted through the Park City Building Department. Each request is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
