(Opinion) New Haven stood for justice in one case this week. And resumed perpetrating cruel injustice in another. The first case is the Trump administration’s bogus, political-retribution lawsuit against the city over our welcoming policy toward immigrants. The mayor enlisted two top-no tch legal minds with histories of fighting for justice to push back against the president. The second case is a civil suit filed by a man who spent two decades in prison based on discredited charges brought by a former detective with a history of criminal and unethical activity at a time of widespread false prosecutions in New Haven. The city hired a lawyer who stood up in court and said … the cop did “nothing improper.” The lawyer signaled that the city intends to revive accusations against the defendant even after the state acknowledged his wrongful conviction (with as $5.84 million payout), the FBI produced a blistering reporting about the ex-detective, and the ex-detective himself was accused of newly tampering with a witness in this very court case. Why are our taxpayer dollars going in our name toward retraumatizing the victim, defending one of the ugliest chapters of police abuse in New Haven history, and preventing our community from healing and moving forward? On the brighter side, a boneheaded reelection ploy by the governor bit the dust this week, cops are learning how to ride bikes up and down stairs, ICE previewed a new script in Fair Haven, and you can now renew your driver’s license for eight years without having to entering the Valley of Death (aka the DMV). Those and other developments are bloviated upon in the latest opinionated vlog news summary from the New Haven Independent assignment desk — er, compost heap. Click on the above video to watch. And remember: The opinions expressed are those of the compost commentator alone, not necessarily those of the New Haven Independent itself or any other humans or entities.
