The sheriff's office has identified the man in custody as Joshua Gonzales, 40, of Vallejo.
On Wednesday, DeWall announced that bronze stars and plaques that honored 21 peace officers had been stolen from a county memorial in Fairfield. Plaques were also stolen from the county's veterans memorial and from other county buildings.
"We will catch you," DeWall said Wednesday. "You cannot hide from us. This is disgraceful, and we will find you."
Keri Griess’ late husband, Kirk, was among the 21 fallen law enforcement officers honored by the memorial. The veteran Marine and CHP officer was killed in 2018.
"Sadness and grief," she said. "It’s just something that’s very sacred."
The memorial wall has been a blessing to her family, Griess said Wednesday.
"You could come, bring flowers, just on certain days that are struggling more than others," she said. "So definitely, it’s a sacred place. It really is."
