San Francisco officials Wednesday said the city’s speed cameras are having a significant impact one year after they were installed. Mayor Daniel Lurie said that a year ago, about 10% of drivers were going at least 10 mph over the speed limit. Now, that number has dropped to about 2%. The cit y installed 56 speed cameras as part of a pilot program, becoming the first in California to deploy the technology. Officials said speeding is the leading cause of severe injuries and deaths on city streets. Most of the cameras are located near schools, senior centers, parks, libraries and other community spaces. After an initial warning period, drivers began receiving citations for speeding. One camera near Bessie Carmichael School led to nearly 3,000 citations and about 17,000 warnings, officials said. City leaders added the cameras are also changing driver behavior. “This isn’t just about consequences for dangerous behavior. It’s about changing driving habits,” said Supervisor Matt Dorsey. “It’s not the severity of the punishment, but the certainty of it that changes behavior.” Citywide, officials said speeding has declined by about 80% across 33 locations where cameras are installed. Among drivers who received a citation, about 65% did not get a second one. San Francisco was the first city in California to deploy speed cameras, but other cities are following. San Jose and Oakland have also installed cameras, though data from those systems is not yet available.
