CHP hits the brakes on speeding during 24hour enforcement effort
Apr 28, 2026
(KRON) -- The California Highway Patrol is stepping up enforcement across the state with a 24-hour maximum enforcement period aimed at reducing speeding-related crashes. The operation began at 6 a.m. Tuesday and focuses on drivers exceeding posted speed limits or traveling too fast for conditions.
Officials say speeding remains one of the leading causes of serious and deadly crashes on California roadways. Preliminary data shows more than 110,000 crashes last year were linked to unsafe speeds, resulting in more than 400 deaths and over 68,000 injuries.

In 2025 alone, CHP officers issued more than 491,000 citations for speed-related violations.
During the enforcement period, officers will be monitoring roadways statewide and acting against drivers who are speeding or driving recklessly.
A new pilot program, known as FAST (Forwarded Actions for Speeding Tickets) is also targeting extreme speeding. Drivers cited for going more than 100 miles per hour can have their cases automatically sent to the DMV’s Driver Safety Branch, which has the authority to suspend or revoke a license.
The CHP says the goal is simple-slow drivers down before a dangerous situation turns deadly.
