The team behind Nacheaux has a new spot: Burger Syndicate. | Burger Syndicate CRESTON-KENILWORTH — Bagel pop-up darling Pipsqueak opened the doors of its first storefront on Saturday, April 11, with long lines and sold-out batches nearly every day since. Founder and owner Madilyn Gibbons a nd her team’s hand-rolled and boiled bagels developed a devoted following during 2024 through their presence at the Milwaukie Farmers Market and area events, so expect a lengthy wait for now, especially if you’re going over the weekend. Choose from a variety of bagel flavors, including everything and cheddar jalapeño, complemented by house cream cheese schmears and toppings like lox or fruit. 3844 SE Gladstone Street PEARL DISTRICT — If you didn’t get a chance to snag a dinner reservation before it closed its doors, we have good news: República is back, at least for a spell. After announcing its closure on January 28 and holding its last dinner service on March 8, Angel Medina shared on Sunday, March 15, that the Mexican-PNW restaurant is switching to daytime service Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Grab conchas, arroz con frijoles, quesadillas, and pozole. No timeline on how long it’ll last, so get while the getting is good. 100 NW 10th Avenue PEARL DISTRICT — The Pearl has a newcomer this month in Hearth Vine, which launched on Thursday, April 2, in the former Henry’s Tavern space of the Henry Weinhard Brewery building. New American cuisine through a seasonal Pacific Northwest lens is the style; think raw bar oysters, tagliatelle with mushrooms from the Hood River area, and lemon brown butter chicken alongside Tillamook buttered potatoes. Pop in for lunch, happy hour, or dinner; the large wine-by-the-glass list makes this a nice option for a post-work drink. 10 NW 12th Avenue PEARL DISTRICT — After first being announced in 2024, Thai street noodle spot Guay Tiew finally debuted in the Pearl District at the end of March. It’s the latest spot from local restaurateur Chookiat Saenguraiporn, who is also behind Thai Peacock and Khao Moo Dang. Brothy noodle stews like guay tiew ruea (boat noodles) are front and center on the menu, with choose-your-own broth and noodle builds, plus rice dishes and snacky sides. 330 NW 10th Avenue BUCKMAN — The team behind wine-forward French-meets-Northwest restaurant L’Orange has a new spot in Buvons, a wine bar which opened on Thursday, March 19, along Southeast Belmont. The spot is bubbly heaven, with a strong sparkling wine and Champagne focus, paired with grilled cheese sandwiches, light nibbles, or L’Orange cake with cardamom custard. If you were a fan of Les Caves’s wine-and-grilled-cheese pairings (current co-owner of L’Orange, winemaker Jeff Vejr, was also behind Les Caves), this spot scratches that much-missed itch. 120 SE Belmont Street BUCKMAN — Also new to the Buckman area as of Friday, April 24: Good Girl, a “sometimes friendly neighborhood dive bar” from bartending pro Paige Cooper, whose resume includes stints at many local bars and San Francisco spots. It’s filling the former home of Home, A Bar, and has already attracted a significant amount of social media buzz for its suggestive teasers and distinct style. 719 SE Morrison Street NOB HILL — Say When, a “blue-collar French food” bistro from the team behind Sit Tite, opened its doors in Nob Hill on Monday, April 20. Former Top Chef competitor BJ Smith is behind the menu, serving up steak frites, croque-monsieurs and madames, and French onion soup alongside cocktails curated by Paul Francis, with Robert Thomas (both of Swift Lounge) rounding out the team. There’s also pinball and pool. The goal is to emulate the atmosphere that made Sit Tite such a hit, but with the French twist. 305 NW 21st Avenue HAWTHORNE — As of Friday, April 17, the former Gigantic Brewing bar on Southeast Hawthorne has a new occupant in Steely’s, a chill neighborhood hangout for smashburgers, wings, and other casual fare. It’s a team effort from Tyler Smith of Smitty’s Taphouse and pop-up Little Brother’s Quinn Gilsdorf and Justin Looper. Along with burgers and wings, there are bologna or fried chicken sandwiches, wedge salads, and chocolate chip cookies. 4343 SE Hawthorne Boulevard HAWTHORNE — Gnome and Faerie, a brewery and restaurant offering botanical ales and seasonal Japanese yoshoku dishes, opened on Thursday, April 9. Owners Shay and Eva Hosseinion bring the holistic ethos of their other enterprise, Elderflower Medicine, to this new endeavor, with beers courtesy of Shay’s Brewed By Gnomes project. Hiori’s Scott Iijima, whose resume includes a Han Oak stint and a Malpractice pop-up, is behind the kitchen program. 3257 SE Hawthorne Boulevard View this post on Instagram OLD TOWN — In more burger news, the folks behind Nacheaux have a new spot: Burger Syndicate, which opened in Ankeny Alley on Thursday, April 9. The options look to be as flavor-packed and inventive as Nacheaux’s Southern Cajun fusion creations; alongside classic smash burgers, there’s the K-Town Burger with gochujang aioli and kimchi, brisket-loaded fries, and fried chicken sandwiches in concha buns. This is a good spot for a late-night bite, staying open until 1 a.m. on Sunday and Wednesday and 2:30 a.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (closed Monday and Tuesday). 221 SW Ankeny Street CENTRAL EASTSIDE — The Stazione is a new wine bar and restaurant from the Columbia River Gorge’s Buona Notte winery. At this light-filled spot, which opened on Friday, March 27, diners can sip glasses of the winery’s diverse bottlings, ranging from less conventional Pacific Northwest wine world offerings like sangiovese and grüner Veltliner to familiar favorites like pinot noir, with snacky eats such as meat and cheese grazing options and porchetta sandwiches on offer. 133 SE Salmon Street, Suite B HOSFORD-ABERNETHY — The former Kashiwagi space has a new occupant in Oscar Food Wine, a natural wine-focused bar that opened its doors at the end of April.
