It’s official: The Brits are back. After an eventful weekend and a security revamp, Washington is set to welcome British royals King Charles III and Queen Camilla this week. It will be their first state visit during Trump’s presidency and the first visit by a reigning monarch since 2007. After a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this past weekend prompted a security review, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the trip would proceed as planned in a statement: “His Majesty is being kept fully informed of developments and is greatly relieved to hear that the President, First Lady and all guests have been unharmed,” a palace spokesperson said. “As you would expect, a number of discussions will be taking place throughout the day to discuss with U.S. colleagues and our respective teams to what degree the events of Saturday evening may or may not impact on the operational planning for the Visit.” The royal couple is expected to be in DC, New York, and Virginia from Monday, April 27, through Thursday, April 29. The British Embassy in DC and the White House have released separate statements on this week’s expected activities. Here’s what we know:  Monday, April 27 Upon arrival, the King and Queen will attend a private tea with President Trump and the First Lady in the Green Room, followed by a tour of the newly expanded White House beehive, according to the White House. Afterward, they will attend a large, but private, garden party at the British Embassy in DC, according to the Embassy. There, the Embassy will display an archival exhibit of previous royal visits to the US over the past 87 years, dating back to the first visit of a reigning royal, King George VI, in 1939. Tuesday, April 28 On Tuesday, King Charles, accompanied by Queen Camilla, is expected to deliver an address to Congress. This will be only the second time a British monarch has addressed Congress, following Queen Elizabeth II’s speech at the Capitol during a 1991 state visit. According to the White House, a traditional military arrival ceremony will take place on the South Lawn, accompanied by national anthems of both countries, followed by the inspection of the troops and remarks from President Trump. Attendees on the South Lawn are expected to include American members of Congress, the President’s Cabinet, the US delegation, the official UK delegation, American military families, and students from the British International School of Washington. The President, First Lady, and Their Majesties will then proceed to the Blue Room Balcony to participate in a Pass in Review of 300 US service members,  which, in a historic first, will be attended by nearly 500 members of the armed forces from all six military branches. After the arrival ceremony, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will sign the White House guest book and participate in an official gift exchange with the President and First Lady in the Blue Room. The President and His Majesty will participate in bilateral meetings, while the First Lady and Her Majesty will join American students at the White House Tennis Pavilion. A small group will use virtual reality headsets to learn about the United Kingdom as part of the “Fostering Future Together” initiative. Participants will also use AI-enabled glasses to learn about American history and the “Special Relationship” by evaluating artifacts from the White House Collection and the National Archives and Records Administration, the White House said. Finally, the King and Queen will return to the White House for a State Dinner hosted by the President and First Lady in the East Room. Wednesday, April 29  The royal couple will visit New York City, to commemorate the economic and cultural ties connecting the British and Americans. The royal visit will also recognize the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks later this year. King Charles and Queen Camilla will commemorate those who lost their lives on 9/11 and meet with serving first responders and victims’ families. King Charles will visit a grassroots community organization working to mentor children and young people affected by food insecurity through a sustainable urban farming after-school initiative, while Queen Camilla will attend an event celebrating both countries’ shared love of literature, including A.A. Milne’s children’s stories featuring Winnie the Pooh, which marks its 100th anniversary this year. They will conclude the visit with a New York reception celebrating the cultural links between the US and the UK, including the UK’s creative industries. Thursday, April 30 On Thursday, April 30, the last day of their four-day visit, the royal couple will travel to Virginia. There, they will attend an America 250 “block party” celebrating the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. While the location has not been officially released yet, previous royal visits have frequented Williamsburg. They will also receive performances by Appalachian cultural groups representing the region’s heritage. In one of the national parks (while they haven’t released that information yet, our bets are on Shenandoah) King Charles will meet Indigenous communities and people involved in conservation initiatives and efforts to protect America’s natural environment. Separately, the Queen will visit a farm to highlight the work of America’s horse racing industry and its long-term connection with British sport.
