When Carlie Butler was driving from Abilene to Lipan, she knew it would be a long road trip. Never did she think she would see a kangaroo on the way! Butler was headed from Abilene to Lipan when she saw it. “I’m the owner of that mobile coffee trailer that broke down on I-20 causing me to be stranded on the highway. I was on my way to cater a wedding and had an axle failure. For 4 hours I was stuck waiting on a tow truck and out of nowhere a kangaroo appeared to hangout with me,” Butler said. Her espresso-inspired business, Espressoak, had been commissioned for a wedding in Lipan. She made it just outside of Gordon when she saw the kangaroo. She said after some time hopping around the service road, she watched it eventually hop back onto some property in the rural area. She said she assumed that’s where the animal came from. “It definitely turned a difficult day into something wildly positive. My small business has received more publicity in this past week than I ever thought possible! We’re now known locally and beyond as the coffee truck with the kangaroo,” Butler said. She is also turning that difficult day into something fun. “Our original brand tagline has been ‘adventure in every brew’ and this just took it to the next level! Although our coffee truck had to be taken in for repairs we’re still doing events by other means and now serving kangaroo-inspired drinks,” Butler said. So where does the kangaroo actually belong? That’s unclear. What is clear is that Texas has various lenient laws when it comes to owning what would be considered an “exotic animal.” While the state does allow people to own most exotic pets, you must have a license or a permit to do so. There are certain animals that require even more paperwork if they are considered by the state to be ‘dangerous’ wild animals. According to Texas law, local governments may have their own rules and regulations which also have to be considered.
