Pierre softball explodes in 7th inning to pull away from Spartans
Apr 24, 2026
With inclement weather in Rapid City, the Pierre Governors picked up an extra home game along with a great opportunity to move above .500 in their fifth game of the regular season. They would take on Spearfish, who was already in their groove after picking up game one of their doubleheader prior to
taking on the Govs. The Spartans defeated Aberdeen Central in the first game of the two, using aggressive baserunning and tactical hitting to end their 0-3 start to the year.
The Spearfish bats stayed hot on a cold and drizzly afternoon jolting them out to an early 3-0 lead against Governors ace McKenzi Flottmeyer. After the initial barrage, Flottmeyer started hitting her spots and settled herself in so the Pierre offense could battle back into the game.
In the fourth inning, a Flottmeyer single followed by a Micah Buffalo bunt would start a two-run rally capped off by base hits from Taryn Spruill and Alivia Heymans.
Spearfish would answer right back with three more runs to stretch the lead back out to three.
Buffalo and the Governors continued to generate offense as both teams went back-and-forth leading to a 6-6 tie in the fifth. Charlie Hull would drive in the 7th run for the Governors to give them a slight edge, but both teams knew the game was far from over. Going into the 7th inning and playing as the “home” team (Spearfish played as the home team even though the game was played in Pierre), the Spartans looked to hold the Governors to a short half-inning and take a crack at the comeback, but Pierre had other plans.
The Governors exploded for a 7-run 7th inning thanks to some smart takes at the plate, some miscues from the Spartans defense and a couple hard hit balls from Ava Nelson and Heymans. Charlie Hull also scored an inside the park homerun, though it would not be scored as such since there was an error on the play.
Pierre would hold on as Flottmeyer was relieved by Hull and the Govs would get three quick outs to pick up the 15-7 win and move to 3-2 on the season. Spearfish fell to 1-4 with the loss.
With continued changes to the schedule in the coming weeks due to the rescheduling this weekend, stay tuned to the local sports page for their upcoming games.
