The Wasatch County Council unanimously appointed Seat F candidate Michael Murphy to fill the midterm vacancy left by County Council Chair Karl McMillan on Wednesday. Murphy, a Republican, will serve as an interim council member until January. McMillan resigned from his position in April, citing serious health issues. Wasatch County Republicans put out the call for candidates to fill McMillan’s seat at the start of the month. Murphy, however, was the sole applicant, making the special election meeting scheduled for April 27 unnecessary.  Republican Party delegates in the 400s precincts instead confirmed the recommendation for Murphy. Only Republican candidates were considered because that was McMillan’s party association.  Murphy, a member of the Wasatch County Planning Commission, is currently campaigning for Seat F in the general election. He is running unopposed in the party, though Joseph Tugaw, a Democrat, is also a candidate in the Seat F race.  County Councilor Erik Rowland, Wasatch County Council chair, will be taking over McMillan’s board appointment with the Military Installation Development Authority. Murphy’s other board appointments will be decided after he is sworn in.  Murphy will take his oath of office on May 6 during the County Council’s first regular meeting of the month.  “We had a chance to meet him during the caucus, so that was nice to get a sense of who he is and where he stands,” Rowland said. “We’re looking forward to seeing more of his involvement with the council.” Murphy previously stated that he would like to get a “head start” in working with the County Council. He said that he is looking forward to “stepping into that seat.” Because Murphy has been appointed to fill the Seat F vacancy, he will leave his position and open up a vacancy on the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission currently has two alternates who may step up to take his place. Those associate members are Harold Wilson and Mark Trenchard.
