Bay Area brewery taps into the air to make beer that's better for the environment
Apr 23, 2026
Who thought drinking beer could help the environment? An East Bay brewery is proving it’s possible.
Almanac Beer Company in Alameda is the first brewery in the world to carbonate its beer by capturing carbon dioxide from the air.
“To be able to literally draw it out of the air or the envir
onment in our parking lot is incredible,” Almanac Beer Company’s Damian Fagan said. “It sounded like science fiction honestly.”
A direct air capture machine outside the brewery pulls in air around the clock. The CO2 that’s captured is then turned into a liquid form of beverage grade CO2 – an essential ingredient for ale.
“It’s what makes beer fizzy,” Fagan said. “It actually adds that effervescence that we all love, but it also provides some degree of flavor, believe it or not.”
