Great Day TV | Fun things in Indiana to do this summer
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each and every week, “Great Day TV” shares information, entertainment, and news you can use.
On the most recent edition of “Great Day,” Amy Howell from Visit Indiana joined host Patty Spitler and WISH-TV an
chor Cody Adams to share spring and summer trip ideas that show off Indiana from Lake Michigan to the Ohio River.
Indiana Dunes National Park on Lake Michigan is a standout option for day trips.
Visitors can hike, birdwatch, enjoy the lakeside pavilion, sign up for kitesurfing lessons, or rent gear on the water. Howell says the sweeping shoreline often surprises people who do not realize Indiana has a beach destination of that scale.
“A lot of people think, well, we’re landlocked. There’s no water. There is!” Spitler added.
In southern Indiana, Holiday World Splashin’ Safari is preparing to open for the season. The park features major coasters such as Thunderbird and a large water park. Howell says many families plan two days there — one for the rides and another for the water park — to make the most of the trip.
Farther north, Indiana Beach in Monticello sits on Lake Shafer and offers fun for both thrill-seekers and families. It is also preparing to open for the season.
“There are boat rides on the lake, plus the amusement park. They’ve got a little boardwalk; think Coney Island. They just added a three-loop rollercoaster last year or two years ago. They also have water rides,” Howell said.
For a slower-paced road trip, Howell pointed to the quilt gardens along the Heritage Trail in the Elkhart, Shipshewana, and LaGrange area. More than 30 large, quilt-patterned flowerbeds are being planted now and are expected to be in full color by late May. Visitors can pick up a trail map at area visitor centers, drive to multiple gardens, and stop at Amish bulk food stores for items such as homemade noodles.
