Hazmat teams swarm Long Island neighborhood amid school vandalism probe
Apr 23, 2026
Authorities investigating an act of antisemitic vandalism at a Long Island high school stumbled upon a surprise secondary scene when they went to the suspected teenage scrawler’s home, officials say.
According to Nassau County police, it started with a swastika drawn in a male restroom at Syoss
et High School on Wednesday. Investigators determined that a 15-year-old allegedly did it, and went to his home.
There, they found several chemicals that had been combined to create explosive materials.
Officers evacuated the house and neighboring homes. Multiple units responded to the scene, including the Nassau County Hazmat Response Team, which carefully removed the hazardous material from the home.
According to investigators, the 15-year-old’s father, 48-year-old Francisco Sanles, paid for the chemicals. He was taken into custody on criminal weapons possession, child endangerment, and other charges.
The teenager is charged with criminal weapons possession, criminal mischief, making graffiti and aggravated harassment. He faces arraignment later Thursday.
