By Haley Lint Vienna Theatre Company (VTC) has done it again! Their production of the classic My Fair Lady, by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, was an utter joy to watch on opening night.  For those unfamiliar, this story takes place in London in 1912, where a low-society Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle (Nicole Headd), is the subject of a bet between the arrogant and snobby phonetics professor Henry Higgins (Charles Boone) and Colonel Pickering (Greg LaNave). Higgins believes he can transform Eliza, whom he refers to as a “guttersnipe” among other things, into a woman who could pass as a duchess.  LEFT: Eric Storck (Alfred Doolittle) and Nicole Headd (Eliza Doolittle); RIGHT: Patrick Cochran, Nicole Headd (Eliza Doolittle), Greg LaNave (Colonel Pickering), and Charlie Boone (Henry Higgins ), in ‘My Fair Lady.’ Photos by Kevin Lukacs. The various crew members who handled the set design and dressing, Charlie Boone, Katie Boone, and Jack Rollins, all contributed to the impressive transformation of the VTC stage into a delightful 1912 London scene. The various backgrounds and props (Claire Tse) were precise enough to set the stage and transport the audience without overwhelming the environment or drawing attention away from the fabulous performance of the cast. The designs and decorations were subtle but effective.  The lighting effects (designed by Ari McSherry) subtly changed between performers and scenes, helping set the mood for the audience’s viewing pleasure. Also well done were the sound effects and musical tracks (by Myer Kim, Emily Doopee, and Jon Roberts), particularly the horse racing.  I’m not sure which was more impressive, the wonderful period costume pieces selected by Julianna Confrancesco and Farrell Hartigan, or how quickly the cast members changed for each new scene that required a costume change, and there were quite a few.  As Eliza, Nicole Headd gives a stunning performance. She had stunning vocals and confidence on stage that was completely warranted after hearing the unbelievably incredible transition of Eliza’s Cockney accent to a more refined “proper” English accent. The two male leads, Charles Boone as Henry and Greg LaNave as Colonel Pickering, also gave impressive performances, with their British-like dry sense of humor and comedic timing. They paired well, interacting with each other and with Nicole Headd’s Eliza. A special nod to Eric Storck for his hilarious portrayal of Alfred Doolittle Shelby Kaplan, Nicole Headd (Eliza Doolittle), and Lauren Sunday in ‘My Fair Lady.’ Photo by Kevin Lukacs. The remaining cast (Cara Giambrone, Janice Zucker, Patrick Cochran, Brandon Seehoffer, Shelby Kaplan, Kim Paul, Caroline Kinney, and Steven Palkovitz) and ensemble (Christine Domin, Bella Huh, Susan Pauly, Ann Storck, and Lauren Sunday) cannot be praised enough for their contributions to the musical numbers. The vocals were outstanding, as was the choreography.  Vienna Theatre Company’s My Fair Lady, under the direction of Katie Boone, is a show that keeps you on your toes, from the dramatic plot to the comedy that shines through, and last but not least, the catchy song and dance numbers. This is a can’t-miss performance for anyone in the Vienna, Virginia, area. Running Time: Approximately two hours and 40 minutes with one 15-minute intermission.  My Fair Lady plays through May 3, 2026, presented by Vienna Theatre Company, performing at Vienna Community Center, 120 Cherry St. SE, Vienna, VA.
