SF honors ‘Grandpa Vicha’ with resolution for senior protections
Apr 21, 2026
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A resolution honoring Vicha Ratanapakdee and calling for stronger protections for seniors is moving forward in San Francisco.
City leaders and family members gathered Tuesday at City Hall to recognize Ratanapakdee’s legacy. The 84-year-old, widely known as “Grandpa Vic
ha,” died in 2021 after being violently knocked to the ground while on a morning walk.
It is a case that became a symbol in the fight against anti-Asian hate.
San Francisco Supervisor Alan Wong, who introduced the resolution, said the measure is aimed at reaffirming the city’s commitment to protecting seniors and addressing safety concerns, particularly within the Asian community.

“There are so many seniors… (who) feel fearful to leave their homes because of these incidents that have happened in the past,” Wong said.
Ratanapakdee’s family says they are now focused on turning grief into action by promoting education and respect for future generations. Advocates say more work is still needed, warning that fear continues to impact seniors across the city.
“Crime breeds isolation in seniors,” one advocate said.
The resolution is expected to be voted on by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday night.
