INDIANAPOLIS One of the states largest agencies has a new directorJennifer Dorfmeyer. As WRTV Investigates reported, DCS Director Adam Krupp has been taking a leave of absence since January 2026.Krupp will continue to earn his $ 210,000 salary as a special advisor to the Governor on child welfare issues, WRTV Investigates has learned.Last week, WRTV Investigates raised questions about a video Krupp made in which he touted a faith-based program as safe.In the November 2025 video posted on the Refuge Girls Academys Facebook, Krupp was seated at his desk at the Indiana Department of Child Services.I want to encourage everyone to come out Saturday night, 6 oclock, to support the Refuge, part of the teen challenge program, where putting hope within reach for teenage girls is part of a safe, faith-based residential program that exists right here in the community, said Krupp in the video. Cant wait to see everybody Saturday as we share more about the mission, the need right here in Boone County and talk about ways you can help.Nine women filed a federal lawsuit on April 8 against Central Indiana Teen Challenge, which is currently operating under the name The Refuge Girls Academy.PREVIOUS | Nine women file lawsuit alleging abuse at Lebanon faith-based program for troubled teensIn a statement on his Facebook page, Adam Krupp said he was on medical leave and that "DCS is in excellent hands during my absence." Krupp was appointed by Governor Mike Braun a year ago.Krupp's leave of absence was not related to discipline, according to the State Personnel Department."Adam Krupp has no discipline in his file and this leave of absence is not related to discipline," the department said in a statement.Krupp oversaw a state agency tasked with investigating child abuse and neglect throughout Indiana. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve Hoosier children and families in Governor Braun's administration. This work has been deeply personal, and I am proud of the work our team has done and will continue to do on a daily basis for Indiana's most vulnerable. I am grateful to Governor Braun for the opportunity to continue serving Indiana by transitioning into a new role as special advisor to the Governor on child welfare related matters, said Krupp in a statement released Tuesday. Indiana's children deserve a system that is stable, compassionate, and relentlessly focused on their well-being; I look forward to being part of that vision moving forward.PREVIOUS | "I would love to see us say more": New DCS director aims to improve transparencyJennifer Dorfmeyer was acting as the current head of DCS during Krupp's absence.Indianas children are our future and our most precious resource. I am grateful for Adam Krupps service and the changes he has made to improve DCS. I have every confidence in Jennifer and her ability to lead this important work at such a critical agency, said Gov. Mike Braun. Governor Braun believes Indianas children are our future and his support for DCS and our work is critical to protecting our most vulnerable. I am grateful the Governor has appointed me to this leadership role and am confident we will do great things together to serve Indianas families, said Dorfmeyer. The appointments are effective immediately.Krupp shared the following email with DCS staff on April 21:"Hi, team. It is so good to be able to communicate with all of you again after three really difficult months away. As most of you know, I have been on a leave of absence for health issues. I was abruptly hospitalized for several days in January and I have been recovering ever since, meeting with doctors and medical experts every other day it seems. I'm truly grateful for the kind words and support that many of you have expressed directly or through others. This really is a great team of kind-hearted individuals who give so much to so many.I wanted to share an important update with all of you directly. Upon return from my leave of absence this week, I will be transitioning out of my role as your Director. (That was an incredibly difficult sentence to write, especially when I think about how many of you I've gotten to know since January of last year.) While this chapter is coming to a close, I've been given the opportunity to continue supporting our mission in a new capacity as Special Advisor to Governor Braun, focusing on child welfare matters and policy initiatives. That means I'm not going far, and I will continue fighting not just for the children and families we serve, but for you, as well. Before anything else, I want to say thank you. Serving alongside you has been the most meaningful work of my career. Every day, you show up to do one of the hardest jobs in public service. You walk into difficult situations, carry the weight of trauma and still find ways to show compassion, professionalism and care. I have seen it in all 92 counties (as exhausting as that tour was, I had so much fun and will carry those memories forever - along with many of the goodies and mementos you kindly gifted me!).We accomplished a great deal in a short period of time. We helped more children achieve permanency than in prior years. We reduced the time children spent in foster care. We began restoring trust in an agency that, for too long, had been under strain from every direction. Through Project Awaken, we started the multi-year journey to transform DCS and child welfare in Indiana. We learned a new mission, vision, purpose, core values, practice model and so on. We built a new Ethics Compliance division from scratch (shout-out to Amber and her team!). We built new bridges across Indiana through initiatives like Called to Care, bringing the faith community into this mission in a deeper and more meaningful way. We expanded Care Portal to more counties (eventually we'll cover the whole state). And we pushed for much-deserved recognition of the work you do. I was proud to support efforts to recognize our case managers as first responders. Though it didn't get across the finish line this past legislative session, that effort will continue if I have any say in the matter. Please know that the conversation has started to change and your work is finally starting to be seen in the manner you deserve. This work is not easy. I know it asks a lot of you, both professionally and personally. It was deeply personal for me too. But I also know the impact you have. Lives are changed because of what you do, even on the days when it may not feel like it. Please keep going. Please keep believing in the mission (I still challenge every single one of you to commit to that MVP and be proud of yourselves for taking on such a meaningful role). And please keep supporting each other. Remember, you are the culture of the agency, not any individual leader.Thank you for allowing me to be part of this team.Best,Adam Krupp" ...read more read less
