A North Texas couple decided to get married in the place that gave them a second chance at love and life.
On Saturday, Jesus Parra and Kelly St. Pierre exchanged vows in front of family, friends and the medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center.
It may not have been the wedding they or
iginally planned, but for the couple, it was a dream come true.
“God gave me a second chance. We’ve been trying to get married since January. I’ve been really sick, but this beautiful hospital provided me with a chance,” said an emotional Parra.
Parra was admitted to the ICU at Baylor University Medical Center in heart failure a few months ago.
In late February, he was placed on the heart transplant list and spent ten weeks in the ICU with his fiancé, Kelly, by his side.
On March 28th, doctors gave him a new heart.
“We didn’t know the obstacles that we would face, but God prepared us, and he carried us through it all,” said St. Pierre during their vow exchange.
Parra has been discharged from the hospital, but is still recovering and embracing the opportunities his new heart brings.
“I get to spend more time with my kids, my grandchildren, watch them grow,” said Parra.
A member of his cardiology team stood witness and held the rings as the couple said ‘I do.’
“It makes what we do worthwhile,” said transplant cardiologist Dr. Melody Sherwood. “There’s definitely a lot of training that we go through to get to this point to take care of patients. And the whole point of that is for them to have longer, better lives.”
