Video shows stolen car doing donuts at chaotic sideshow in Hayward

HAYWARD, Calif. (KRON) -- KRON4 obtained video of a sideshow that took place early Saturday morning in Hayward.
Police received reports of a sideshow in the area of Clawiter Road and Depot Road from CHPs air unit at around 1:43 a.m. Around 60 cars were reported in the area, according to the Hayward
Police Department.
Video of the incident shows one of a blue Chevy Camaro with no license plates doing donuts in the middle of a crowd before crashing into a semi-truck.
"Why?" the truck driver said on camera. "Why would they do this?"
The semitruck driver waited for hayward police who arrived shortly after 1:40 a.m., but the occupants of the blue Chevy Camaro had already fled and the sideshow quickly disbursed.
Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas woke up to the news. He said for most people sideshows are loud and disruptive, but it can also be life-threatening.
"Sideshows are violent," Salinas told KRON4. "And sideshows are completely and utterly unsafe."
Salinas says this one was particularly dangerous.
"There were reports of bystanders actually getting run over," Salinas said.
In the video it appears the vehicle does hit people watching.
Salinas and the city of Hayward continue to crack down on sideshows going as far as to make it illegal to just watch one.
"We prohibit bystanders," Salinas said. "If you're a bystander at a sideshow you will be arrested and charged equally to being a participant of the sideshow."
The law, which went into effect in 2024, allows police to cite spectators or even jail them for up to six months. Salinas believes the law has made a difference.
"Since we past the ordinance a few years ago, I have not received as many call or emails about sideshows," Salinas said. "Last night was reckless and dangerous and it's precisely why we passed the ordinance we did."
And he thinks more agencies need to take a aggressive approach to discourage sideshows.
"They're dangerous," Salinas said. "And it's going to take multiagency and the collaboration of multiple agencies to stop them."
Police say the vehicle involved was stolen out of San Jose and had no plates.
