Outside The Star in Frisco, where NFL dreams often pass through the doors, one wide receiver is taking a different approach, standing outside and waiting for his chance. Jayleen Record isn’t arriving with a combine invite or draft buzz. Instead, he’s holding a sign displaying his stats and ho ping someone inside notices. “I’ve been playing football since I was 4,” Record said. Record, a team captain at Weber State who recently graduated, began his college career on scholarship at SMU. The Dallas native also graduated from James Madison High School. As he waits outside the Cowboys’ headquarters, he says his goal goes beyond just one team. “I love the Cowboys. I’m Dallas made, I’m homemade, but this is for all 32 teams, like I’m ready,” Record said. To make his case, Record is relying on his performance and determination. “That’s why I brought my stats out to show I can compete with the top guys,” he said. His motivation, he says, runs deeper than football. Record’s father died from cancer in 2019, a loss that continues to drive him. “My pops was my best friend. He died from cancer in 2019. And so I’m chasing the dream for us,” Record said. That promise fuels the long hours he spends outside The Star, hoping someone is watching. “How bad do you want this? I want this bad. I want this more than I want to breathe. I want it bad,” he said. Off the field, Record says he brings character and stability, supported by his wife, a former college track athlete. “I don’t get in trouble, I’m for the community, I’m a family-oriented guy, so I got everything you need on and off the field,” Record said. He may not be on a roster yet, but in Frisco, Jayleen Record is determined to make sure he’s at least on the radar. This story was originally reported for broadcast by NBC DFW.
