Sports in Brief: A midseason update on the Wasatch High School spring sports teams

The Wasatch boys soccer team took down Payson 5-0 on the road Tuesday. The Wasps poured four goals on their opponents in the game’s first half, tacking on one more in the second. Wasatch took on Maple Mountain Thursday at 7 p.m. on the road, looking to continue their four-game winning streak. Win
ning the 5A state title in 2023 and 2024 and making the championship game last season, the Wasps are ranked 12th in the classification.
The Wasatch boys lacrosse team defeated Maple Mountain 11-3 at home Wednesday. The Wasps opened up a 6-0 first half lead, also outscoring their opponents 5-3 in the second half. Wasatch is 8-2 this season and will travel to face Salem Hills at 7 p.m. Friday. The Wasps are ranked seventh in 5A.
The Wasatch girls lacrosse team escaped with a 10-8 win over Maple Mountain Wednesday on the road. The win moves the Wasps to 7-5 this season, and they’ll face Salem Hills Friday at 6 p.m. at home. Wasatch is ranked 16th in 5A; if the regular season ended Thursday, they would have received the final, first-round home game in the playoffs.
The Wasatch softball team dominated Timpview 17-2 at home Tuesday. The Wasps exploded for eight runs in the third inning, heavily contributing to the mercy rule-ended victory. Sophomore Peyton Sunland led Wasatch with six runs batted in (RBIs) Tuesday. The Wasps are 9-11 this season and were scheduled to face Payson at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at home. Wasatch is ranked 14th in 5A.
The Wasatch boys tennis team fell to Timpview 5-2 Wednesday at home. The Wasps’ Colton Clark and David Despes scored the team’s two wins at the three and four singles spots, respectively. The loss moves Wasatch to 7-6 in dual matches this season, also finishing in ninth place of 12 teams in March 7’s St. George Invitational division one play. The Wasps will next take on Springville Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at home.
The Wasatch boys volleyball team defeated Salem Hills 3-0 on the road Thursday. The Wasps won set one 25-17, set two 25-19 and set three 25-17. Senior JJ Seller led Wasatch with 12 kills Thursday. The Wasps are 19-1 this season and set to take on Spanish Fork at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home. Wasatch is ranked atop the state and 27th in the nation, according to MaxPreps. The Wasps fell in last season’s state title game.
