Miners boys tennis team enters spring break 54
Apr 17, 2026
The Miners boys tennis team faced an uphill battle this season, having to replace its one doubles team of seniors Adam Rose and Scotty Morris from last season.
“Everyone misses Adam and Scotty,” said Park City second-year Head Coach Cole Lee.
The Miners appear to be coping well howeve
r, going 5-4 to open this season. Park City defeated Murray 3-2 last Thursday to head into their spring break on an upswing, and will return to take on Highland Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at home.
“We’re feeling really good about our start to the season so far,” Lee said.
The Miners have been playing freshmen Brandon Gurule and Thatcher Ford at three singles and two doubles to fill Rose and Morris’ shoes.
Lee said he has been pleased with the play of those freshman as well as sophomore Thomas Rogowski at one singles. He also sees his one doubles team of junior Charlie Ginster and sophomore Johnny Lane rounding into form at the perfect time.
“Thomas has been rock-solid all season and is playing some fantastic tennis,” Lee said. “He’s really taken it to the next level with his consistent work during the offseason.”
He continued, “We’ve put a lot of focus into doubles strategy with them (Ginster and Lane) and that’s starting to pay off.”
Park City is looking to improve in their final three regular season matches against Highland, Skyline and Juan Diego Catholic. The Skyline and Juan Diego Catholic matches are on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, both at 3:30 p.m. on the road.
The Region 10 Tournament will be held April 27 and 28, and Lee said he believes the Miners have a chance to claim the title. He also believes they can improve upon last season’s fourth place state finish; this year’s tournament will be held May 8 and 9.
“This year’s region is tougher than last,” Lee said. “The region trophy is 100% within our reach and the guys know that.”
He continued, “As for state, we have a week and a half after the region tournament to get our guys playing their best tennis of the season.”
Lee is hopeful Park City High School’s late spring break will give his team time to rest up before the final stretch. In order to do well at state, obtaining high seeds and advancing far in individual brackets will be paramount.
“There are some heavy-hitters in 4A,” Lee said. “So our regular season results are especially important because they influence what seeds our guys will receive at state.”
He continued, “The message over spring break has been for our guys to relax, recover and maintain their baseline level of fitness. Tennis is such a physical sport and mentally demanding sport, so a week’s rest deep into the season should actually be a huge benefit.”
Lee believes the program is heading in a great direction. The Miners have won 14 state titles, most recently in 2019.
“I couldn’t be happier with the direction the program is headed,” Lee said. “Once the new complex is complete, we’ll have eight courts to run practices and matches on, which will totally transform our program. … If you look down the pipeline, and at our current roster, I think our guys have a real shot at taking home a state trophy in the next year or two.”
