Encore! Maryland’s theatrical tax credit program extended by General Assembly
Apr 17, 2026
Good news for theater lovers in Baltimore, as Maryland legislators have extended the state’s Theatrical Production Tax Credit Program through June 30, 2032.
The program was launched in 2022, and the extension–approved through SB0440 AND HB0472–ensures it will continue for years, making
the area more attractive to producers looking to develop new theatrical works. Benefits of the program include a 25% refundable tax credit on qualified in-state theatrical production expenses like set design, lighting, wardrobe, lodging, and other needs typical of large-scale productions. The maximum tax credit is $2 million per production.
“This extension is a powerful investment in Maryland’s arts and culture community,” said Ron Legler, president of the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center, a Broadway Across America venue, in a statement. “This is more than just policy it’s a commitment to keeping our stage lights bright and our venues filled with world-class talent.”
The Theatrical Production Tax Credit Program has been directly responsible for Maryland’s ability to launch major Broadway Across America (BAA) productions, including “The Wiz,” “Life of Pi,” “ Juliet,” “Water for Elephants,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “The Great Gatsby.” The 2026/2027 Hippodrome Broadway Series includes three scheduled launches as well: “Maybe Happy Ending,” “Heathers,” and “SIX.”
Broadway shows that tour around the country have significant economic impact on the local communities in which they are presented. The Broadway League’s “Economic Impact of Touring Broadway 2023-2024” report showed that touring Broadway shows generated $5.7 billion across the United States, 91% of which stayed in the local communities.
In Baltimore, BAA productions generated $40.2 million in economic activity in 2023 and 2024. This reflects direct expenditures of presenting the shows and additional spending by theatergoers.
“The impact of these productions extends far beyond the stage,” Legler said. “By collaborating with our local leaders on the tax credit program, we’re ensuring Baltimore remains a critical stop in the national Broadway pipeline.”
